Club scores in Sutton Sports Awards!

At the presentation evening for the Sutton Sports Awards on 21st October, Gavin Cook, lead coach of the Club's Starters' Section, was presented with the Sports Coach of the Year Award by the Mayor of Sutton, Councillor Dr Brendan Hudson, much to the delight of the Club members present, especially the younger ones.

Since joining the Club a mere two and a half years ago, Gavin gradually became more involved, starting as a parent who rode with the group and then becoming a Parent Helper. In 2007 he gained his First Aid certificate and Level 1 Award in Coaching Cycling, and took over as lead coach of the Starters section. These are riders from 5 years upwards, a group often considered too young even by other Go-Ride cycling clubs. Gavin ensures they have a thorough grounding in the basics of cycling before they move up to the next level, making full use of the Go-Ride skills exercises which help keep their learning fun. He is also lead coach of the fortnightly cyclo-cross training at Sutton Arena when he works with more experienced riders. He co-operates closely with the Club's other coaches and is a valuable member of the coaching team.

He became a Committee Member in 2008. His contribution to the Club in general terms has also been invaluable, and included obtaining and installing a storage container at the new venue and assisting with race organisation.

Gavin tells me that the enjoyment he gets from coaching is when he sees the youngsters progress in their riding. His enjoyment is so evident that it is infectious, and contributes even further to the development of their cycling.

The Club itself was a Runner-up in the Sports Club of the Year category (won by Carshalton Athletic Junior Football Club). This is a great tribute to all the coaches, leaders and volunteers whose dedication, week in, week out, has made Sutton CC/De Ver Cycles such a flourishing club.

The Sutton Sports Awards are organised and sponsored by the London Borough of Sutton Sports Council. As the Sutton Squad for the London Youth Games is also sponsored by Sutton Sports Council, the presentation evening is a combined event celebrating the Sports Awards and the achievements of the Borough's team for the Games.

In this year,s London Youth Games the Sutton Squad achieved overall 4th place out of the 33 London boroughs, its best result ever. The Cycling Team, all members of Sutton CC/De Ver Cycles, received an honourable mention and were featured in the video of the event that opened the evening's proceedings. The Junior Team of Jack Haining, Ben Scott and Chris McGovern (all young enough to have been in the Juvenile Team) came 12th and the Juvenile Team of Jack Wills, Aidan Woolven, Andrew Bradshaw and Dylan Wymer came 9th. The combined position of the teams was 12th, earning a valuable 65 points towards the Borough's overall total.
