Parade 1

The London Borough of Sutton's theme for the Parade was sustainable transport, so cyclists were clearly needed, and Sutton CC/De Ver Cycles was more than happy to help.

Eleven children and ten adults from the Club joined the Mayor and other groups from the borough. They cycled along the streets of central London in front of crowds estimated to be about half a million, out on a dull day to watch the colourful spectacle of decorated floats, bands and entertainers.

The Mayor, Cllr Myfanwy Wallace, travelled in a cycle rickshaw, which at one stage was powered by Starters' Coach Gavin Cook.

Eighteen of the 32 London boroughs took part and Sutton was winner of a £1000 special prize which will be added to the money collected for the Mayor's charity, Parkinson's Outreach, along the route. Overall winner was the London Borough of Ealing, whose theme was the abolition of slavery.

Our members, especially the young ones, are looking forward to meeting the Mayor again at her thank-you party for participants, when they will be given their commemorative medals.

Quotes from some of the youngsters . . .

Chris: "It was all very busy, with huge crowds. We had to go impossibly slow. It was fun."

Dominic: "It was really fun. I got to ride beside the Mayor."

Lewis: "The New Year's Day Parade was fantastic. We were riding our cycles. People were cheering and saying hello to me as well."

Matthew: "It was cool pulling stunts in front of everyone. It was nice to see everyone joining in. We had a really good time out."

. . . from some of the adults . . .

Clive: "I personally felt proud each time I heard the commentary telling the great crowds lining the streets of Central London that London Borough of Sutton is a 'green' borough mixing town and countryside and has such successful cycling club active in its area. Cycling alongside (the Mayor's) 'chariot' yesterday I could see how great an impact Myfanwy made on the crowds."

Gavin: "Just a quick mail to say how much fun we had taking part in the parade . It was good to see the SCC turn out all in club colours, and the enthusiasm of all the Sutton participants was excellent. We were very proud to be part of the celebration."

Julian: "It was a spectacular occasion. All the children really enjoyed it and it was a good show by Sutton!!"

Paul: "There was a great fun atmosphere throughout the day. A highlight was watching the Indian sword dancers practising beforehand, especially the one doing forward rolls with a sword in each hand!"

. . . and by E-card from the Mayor, Cllr Myfanwy Wallace . . .

"You made my day but more importantly you made the day for Sutton. We had the largest turnout on the New Year's Day Parade in Central London and this was highly noticeable. We were awarded the organiser's prize. As soon as the medals arrive from the London Parade we will have a thank you party of which there is a suggetion that it will be at Westcroft."

"Many thanks for your hard work and participation."
