Clean Sweep for Sutton CC at Stamner Park

Go-ride SE Interclub Competition - Round 3

Sunday 16th November saw the third round of the British Cycling SE Region Go-Ride Interclub Competition, with a cyclo-cross race at Stamner Park, Brighton. VC Jubilee were the hosts for the day. A comprehensive course had been set out with different courses and course lengths for each age group.

First off were the U10's, who faced 10 laps of a large grass circuit, the going was definitely "soft". Ten Sutton riders were on the start line out of the field of 27: Toby Cook, Lewis Glaysher, Connie Godden, Gemma Heath, Lewis Heritage, Thomas Ives, Matthew McGovern, Louis Rose-Davies and brothers Josh and Lucas Mead. Louis led the Sutton riders from the off and a fast and furious race soon emerged. A major crash on the first bend took out Matthew, but he was soon back riding again and chasing the pack despite a badly injured and bleeding knee.

Gemma moved steadily through the pack to join the top 10 riders, closely followed by Connie. Lewis G showed tremendous determination and stamina, battling against the elements to complete the course even though his bike had just a single gear.

At the finish the Sutton girls carried off a clean sweep for the Gold and Silver medals, with Gemma first and Connie second. A fantastic result ...

For the boys, Louis was the first Sutton boy home, closely followed by Matthew, Josh, Thomas, Toby, Lewis H, Lucas and Lewis G.

Afterwards all riders commented on what a tough course it was, "the big hill at the start was a killer" said Lewis H; "very tiring but good" said Louis. Although there was some relief as Gemma pointed out "the downhill section at the back of the course was best with a lovely cooling breeze". Lucas summed up the enthusiasm of the race "it was really exciting, everyone was cheering us on.".

Next off were the U12's with Aidan Woolven racing in Sutton colours. The U12 course was 9 laps of a longer course which included a section through the woods. Cunningly hidden in the woods was a steep hill climb, designed to surprise any rider who had arrived late and not ridden the course first!! Aidan finished a very creditable 7th place, against some very strong competition. After the race Aidan commented that "the fast dismount and mount training we have had was really good when I came to that steep hill." Our Wednesday night training sessions must be working!

The Youth course (U14 and U16) was a very long course including long grass sections and several very steep and long hilly sections. Chris McGovern represented Sutton in U14 section, Will Sinclair in the U16. the 30 minute, 14 lap race. Chris suffered an unfortunate mechanical failure on the second bend with chain coming off. Many riders were unable to finish, but despite his early setback, Chris battled on and managed to finish the course. Will had a tough race, feeling unwell for much of the race! Despite this, he battled on to pick up 9th place.

Well done to all Sutton riders. A great turnout and a great effort shown by everyone!
