Win for Sutton at SE Interclub Competition!

A good group of riders, coaches and parents all turned up at the Cyclopark, Gravesend, on Saturday 1st September to compete in the Go-Ride Interclub Team Championship for the South East region. Despite being a rider short, Sutton CC/De Ver Cycles won the event - an excellent result!

Clubs fielded teams of 12 riders - 3 Mountainbike (MTB) and 3 road for each of two broad age bands U10/U12 and U14/U16 - who rode all three events in their discipline. Our team, however, had only 2 MTB U14/U16 MTB riders.

Cyclopark is a brilliant venue. The MTB section needed 4 different courses to cover all of the events and each one was one that would have been fun to ride !

U10s/U12s Dominic Cook, Lewis and Alex Glaysher rode a consistent, error-free MTB team time trial and U14/U16 riders Max Nelson and Louis Suggett got on with theirs fuss-free. There was an excellent third place from Louis in the mass-start MTB race, and all three of the younger MTB riders got through their heats to the final.

The U10s/U12s Road team had a good start with Luke and Emily Ashwood mixing it in the lead group and Jude Wilson (in his first road race) giving an excellent performance in the chase group. Over the six laps of the race the field gradually spread out, but all the team put in impressive sprint finishes to give good positions.

The U14s/U16s Road team had their work cut out with some very strong opposition. All the Sutton riders held out in the main bunch for the first few laps. Over the remaining ten laps the field stretched out, but excellent pace from Harry Clarke meant he was one of three riders ahead of the main group, finally finishing third. Considering the field, Toby Cook and George White gave an impressive effort to finish in the top twenty.

The next event was the Italian Pursuit or Team Sprint, in which the U10s/U12s did 1½ laps and U14s/U16s 3 laps. Both our teams looked well drilled, with nice close formations. The times they put in were outstanding.

The final event was a Time Trial in which all the Sutton Road team gave a good performance.

All the boys and girls were tired at the end of an excellent day's racing organised by Club Cyclopark. The venue was great. the weather was warm, and to cap it all Sutton CC/De Ver Cycles were crowned SE Region Go-Ride Interclub Team Champions for 2012. We beat some really strong teams, including two from Team Darenth.

Well done to all who took part, you all contributed to this success!
