Round 3, Gorrick Saddle Skedaddle Mountain Bike Races

Sunday 6th March 2011

Heath Warren, Hampshire

The course was fast and dry with lots of fantastic single track. A small contingent of Sutton racers turned up early in the morning for the 9am start.

First off were the Youth riders, with Chris McGovern representing the Club. Chris had a great race finishing 5th after having his rear wheel fall out during his second lap.

Next was the Juvenile race (Under 14s) in which we had no riders, followed by the Under 12s race two minutes later. Sutton had three riders in this race: Matthew McGovern, Josh Mead and Gemma Heath. It was a pretty large field, with all the usual racers from the cross season taking part After a fast, long start on a fire-road the riders entered the single track in the woods with Ben Tullett (Palmer Park Velo) followed by Josh Mead, and Matthew McGovern not far behind. Josh and Ben caught up with the tail-end of the Juvenile race and started overtaking the tail-end riders. The Under 12s and Under 10s do a 3/4 lap race which splits off from the main course about two-thirds of the way round. At the split point Ben and Josh missed their change of course, as the marshal was standing in front of the sign. In addition, he thought they were part of the Juvenile race and told them to follow the Juveniles. Matthew was close behind but took the lead on the correct course. He then kept his lead until the finish, taking a fine first place. Josh and Ben finished later - a bit confused as to why they lost their places. It was still a great ride from Josh as he would have placed 6th in the Under 14s!

Gemma Heath had yet another great race taking first place in the Under 12 Girls race. So there was a clean sweep for Sutton in the Under 12s!

The next race to go was the Under 10's with Lucas Mead as our sole racer. Lucas had a superb race coming in second place. The Gorrick races have long courses especially for the younger riders with lap times of around 30 minutes.

We are all looking forward to Round 4 at Porridgepot Hill, Deepcut, on the 20th March.
